On Saturday afternoon, Portage hosted the gymnastics regional, where six teams and eight individuals competed in hopes to continue their season by qualifying for the state meet. The two individuals from Portage, did just that. Bobbie Russell started out on bars and posted a 9.325, which was good enough to place fifth on the event. The girls then headed to beam, where Payton Peele nailed her routine! All of the Portage gymnasts waited anxiously for Payton’s score to be posted, because they knew all she needed was a 9.325 to qualify for state. There were tears of joy and happiness when a 9.475 was flashed, meaning Payton automatically qualified on beam. Bobbie then competed on floor, and posted a 9.575, which was .05 higher than what she needed to hit the qualifying score on that event. She finished on vault with a 9.55, giving her a 37.05 all around score to finish her all around competing for her junior year. Bobbie and Payton will both be competing at Ball State Arena on Saturday, March 14th. Bobbie will represent Portage on bars and floor, and Payton will represent Portage on beam. Good luck to all of the teams and individuals that qualified. Go Indians!
