Portage Wrestling Looking to Get Back on Track against DAC foe Merrillville
The Portage Indians wrestling team (#5 in Indiana, #36 Nationally) look to get back in the win column against Merrillville tonight in the PHS Main Gym after placing 2nd at Lake Central’s Harvest Classic to Perry Meridian (#3 in state, #45th Nationally). Portage was without State #2 Kris Rumph at 138 and #7 Anthony Maceo at 195 for the Harvest Classic and had #1 Jacob Moran (106) wrestling at 113. The Falcons of Perry Meridian utilized timely falls to pick up the 26 point win over the Indians.
A Look Ahead to Tonight:
Merrillville comes to Portage off of a loss to Wawasee last week. Merrillville has a fairly young team, but is coached by Coach David Maldonado. Coach Maldonado has built Merrillville into a perenial powerhouse and even the young Pirates team coming to Portage will sure to have some tricks up their sleeves.
Matches to See:
106/113: Jacob Moran (Indiana’s #1 106) might face off against Merrillville’s Martin Cruz (#13 at 106). These two will face off for the first time in their high school careers, as Moran was ruled ineligible last year by the IHSAA. Cruz is 2-2 against Portage wrestlers in his career, splitting matches with last year’s 106 Ty Haskins.
At 152/160, there will most likely be a ranked matchup between Portage’s #3 ranked Donnell (DJ) Washington Jr. and Merrillville’s #15 Aaron Griggs. DJ transferred to Portage last year from Marion Catholic in Illinois and is looking to continue making a statement in Indiana. DJ is currently 5-0 as an Indian. Aaron Griggs will come into the meet with a record of 4-2. If the match between Washington and Griggs does not occur, Merrillville’s 145 pounder is Malik Hoover. Hoover spent time last year in the rankings and will also not be any type of pushover in the bout.
The matchup between Chester Swopes (#13 at 220) and Brandon Streck (#2 at 220) might be the matchup of the night. Chester comes into the match having won his last four matches and topped it off with a Harvest Classic championship at 220. His lone loss is to #1 (at 195) ranked Lucas Davison of Chesterton. Streck finished 8th last year at the state tournament at 285 pounds. In his only appearance of the season, Streck received a forfeit against Valparaiso.
